Our Booth At CSHA 2013

The RWH Technology team attended the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention in Long Beach, March 7-9, 2013. This annual event brings together over 1400 speech-language pathologists and audiologists from all over the state. This was our first experience exhibiting at a conference. We had a lot of fun, received excellent feedback, met some great contacts, and learned a lot. This article will discuss some of the items we used for our booth.

The CSHA 2013 exhibit hall opened March 7, but our preparations began 2 months earlier. Exhibitor registration included an 8’x10′ draped booth, with a table, two chairs and a basic sign. We wanted our booth to stand out and help bring in visitors, so we ordered a number of items.

Colorful horizontal and vertical banners provided a background for our booth. We made the designs in Illustrator and ordered the banners from Staples:

  • 8′ x 2.5′ Horizontal Banner
  • 2.5′ x 6′ Vertical Banner

At the back of our booth was a black cloth and a metal frame. We attached the horizontal banner to the metal frame using rope and hooks.

We attached the vertical banner to a Signworld 33″ Retractable Banner Stand. As noted in the reviews on Amazon.com, if the pin is pulled, the banner will retract with great force. Lucky for us, the top part of the banner slipped out and no damage was done. If the banner was properly attached, it would have ripped. We decided that pulling the pin was too dangerous and instead we would carefully roll the banner up ourselves. We had some trouble with the top part of the banner slipping out, so we used superglue to keep it in place.

A blue table throw with the RWH Technology logo covered the plain black/white table.

We demonstrated Speak Colors and Speech Cards on an iPad 3. To minimize the risk of someone walking off with our iPad, we used a Kingston SecureBack Security Case and Lock, which is compatible with the iPad 4, iPad 3 and iPad 2. It was very easy to setup and worked well for us. Although we didn’t try dropping the iPad and noone tried to steal it.

In addition to business cards, we also provided colorful postcards of Speak Colors and Speech Cards so visitors to our booth could take information about the apps home. We made the designs in Illustrator and ordered the postcards from Staples.

For freebies, we provided 0.5 oz bottles of hand sanitizer and candy.

We had a draw for a variety of items, including iTunes Gift Cards and free copies of our apps. Attendees could enter the draw by placing their business card in a box. We had some blank cards for people to fill out in case they did not have a business card. For the draw box, we used a plastic container and cut a hole in the lid. A small sign with a description of the draw was attached to complete the draw box.

Long Beach is just a two hour drive from our headquarters in San Diego. We easily fit everything into the car. A large suite case should fit all the items if we were to fly to a convention.

CSHA 2013 was fantastic! Demonstrating the apps to the attendees was very enjoyable. It was very motivating to meet and talk to users of our apps. We received a number of excellent ideas to make our apps better. We will try to implement some of those ideas over the next few months. It was a pleasure to meet other app developers, including 123apps4Me and JOTx. We greatly appreciate the efforts of the CSHA 2013 Convention Committee for organizing the event.
