How to re-download SpeakColors onto another iPad

Recently, a customer asked how they could open the the full version of SpeakColors on a second iPad without having to re-purchase the app. Other apps had transferred over from one iPad to another, but not SpeakColors. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and resolve the issue of re-downloading SpeakColors onto a second iPad.

First, verify the Apple ID used on one iPad matches the Apple ID used on the second iPad:
1. Tap Settings > iTunes & App Store
2. Apple ID’s should match

Next, check the iOS version on the second iPad.  Speak Colors requires a minimum of iOS 9.3.  To check which version of iOS you have:
1. Tap Settings > About
2. See “Version”.

If your version is less than 9.3, you can try upgrading.  To upgrade:
1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
2. Tap Settings > Software Update
3. If there is an update available, there should be a button to download and install.

If your Apple ID’s match and you are on atleast iOS 9.3, then you should be able to re-download the app onto your second iPad. There are two versions of the full SpeakColors, and they have different steps for re-downloading.

Speech Cards Updated for 64-bit and iOS 10

It’s been a while since we last updated Speech Cards. Recently you may have received this warning message when starting the app:

iOS Compatibility Alert

The above warning message appears for 32-bit apps. Apple introduced the warning message with iOS 10.1 to push developers to update theirs apps for 64-bit. All of Apple’s iOS devices now use 64-bit chips.

Today, I am happy to announce the release of Speech Cards Version 1.4.0. This important release updates the app for 64-bit architecture and is optimized for iOS 10. You will no longer receive the warning message above.

What’s next for Speech Cards?

Speech Cards was created in 2012 and was one of my first apps. It is programmed in Objective-C, uses a SQLite database, and the user interface is all done 100% programmatically (including auto layout). The iOS world has changed a lot since then and I’ve learned a lot too!

Work has begun to re-write Speech Cards with the goal of making it easier and faster to add new features. The app will be re-written in Swift, a modern programming language, which is a joy to use. Storyboard, the technology to visually implement user interfaces in iOS, has significantly matured and really helps reduce development time. The user interface will be re-implemented in Storyboard. With an easier and faster update process, I hope to implement more of the great ideas sent to us by our users.

Thank you for reading.

WWDC 2014

WWDC 2014

A lot of exciting news from Apple at the WWDC last week! The next version of iOS was announced with many new features. Probably the biggest news was the new programming language, named Swift. iOS 8 will be available to the public in Fall 2014. Until then, I’ll be getting more familiar with iOS 8 and maybe we can use some of its new features in our apps. For more information on iOS 8, please visit https://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/.

Below are some notes of the upcoming iOS 8.

Family Sharing

  • Up to six people in your family can share purchases from the App Store without sharing accounts.
  • Family purchases can be made with the same credit card.
  • Can approve a child’s spending from a parent’s device.
  • Enable “Ask to Buy” to require your child to get permission before making purchases.

App Bundles

  • A number of new features are coming to the App Store, including the ability for developers to sell bundles of apps at a discount.
  • Maybe we will see a bundle of RWH Technology apps.

HomeKit & HealthKit

  • HomeKit will make it easier for developers to create apps for you to control devices around your house. Devices may include lights, heating, doors, etc.
  • HealthKit is a platform for integrating all your health and fitness data in iOS.
  • Both HomeKit and HealthKit have a lot of potential for helping those with disabilities.

Swift

  • Swift is a new, modern programming language for iOS.
  • Includes features to make code more expressive. This gives the programmer more flexibility in design.
  • Is a safer language, so fewer errors and therefore fewer crashes and bugs.
  • The interactive playground will be great for those learning how to program. Students can type code and immediately see results.
