Speech Cards 1.3.0 – New Options for Group Sessions

Speech Cards is great for group speech therapy sessions. Speech Cards supports groups of all sizes and keeps scores for each student. Changing from one student to another is quick and easy. On the iPad version, only two taps are required to change students. However, sometimes you forget to change students and accidentally score the wrong student. We have two exciting new features in Speech Cards version 1.3.0 to help you in your group sessions:

  1. Option to automatically advance to the next student in the list. When swiping or changing to a new card, the app will select the next student. This option is disabled by default.
  2. Option to announce the name of the next student. This option serves as an auditory cue for when it is another student’s turn. To hear the name of the student, you will need to use the microphone on the screen for editing the name of the student. This option is enabled by default.

Both of these new options are accesible from the Options screen.

Conclusion

We think the new options will greatly improve the flow of your group sessions and reduce scoring mistakes. The new options for group sessions were designed with this rule in mind: a new card equals somebody else’s turn. Not everyone uses the same rules. The options can be disabled if they do not suit your needs. Thank you Special Apps, Special Kids for suggesting the option to automatically advance to the next student! We appreciate suggestions from our users. We would love to hear your feedback on this update, particularly on how you use Speech Cards with groups. Reviews on the App Store are greatly appreciated. Please leave a comment or contact us if you have any questions.

SpeakColorsHD Update for iOS 7

SpeakColorsHD - I like the orange ball

The latest update for SpeakColorsHD includes a number of changes, including iOS 7 compatibility and new sentence types for the color “orange”. SpeakColorsHD version 3.2.1 is currently waiting for review by Apple. Please continue reading to learn more about the upcoming changes.

*** Update 11/25/2013 ***
SpeakColorsHD version 3.2.1 is now available for download on the App Store.

1. iOS 7 compatible.

iOS 7 is the latest version of the iPad operating system. iOS 7 features a new, minimalist, flat design. SpeakColorsHD now uses the design style of iOS 7.

2. Three new sentence types.

We have received many requests for more sentence types that use the color “orange”. Two out of the three new sentence types can be used with the color “orange”.
  I like the __ __
  I want an __ __
  I want a __ __

3. Removed male default voice. Default voice is now female.

Many of our users were not satisfied with the male default voice, so we made the decision to remove it.

4. Take photos with built-in device camera.

You now have more customization options. Now you can take photos and import them from within the app.

5. Spanish Localization of text for buttons, pop-up windows, various screens.

SpeakColors Español and SpeakColorsHD share the same core code. A nice side effect of this code sharing is that SpeakColorsHD gets Spanish Localization. The text on various buttons, pop-up windows, and various screens (such as Help), will show in Spanish if your iPad’s Language setting is on “Español”. Spanish language speakers could use SpeakColorsHD to learn English as a second language.

6. Preview in the “Add New Sentence” screen.

A preview of the sentence is displayed at the top of the “Add New Sentence” screen. This feature was developed for SpeakColors Español and it may also be useful for our SpeakColorsHD users. The preview provides a reminder for which sentence type/template and color you are working with. When you type text for a new noun or select a noun from the list, the preview automatically updates.

SpeakColorsHD - Add New Sentence

7. Cancel button in the “Edit Noun Text” screen.

For our user’s convenience, we have added a Cancel button to the screen for editing the text of a noun.

Speech Cards for School-Based SLPs

School may be out for the summer, but we have been working on some exciting new features to help school-based Speech-Language Pathologists. A survey by ASHA found that the median caseload of a school-based SLP (in the USA) was 47 students. Without adequate support, managing such a large number of students in an app can be difficult. Speech Cards is a very versatile iOS app as it can be customized to suit the goals of a wide range of students. We are very excited to share with you, the new features of Speech Cards version 1.1.2, designed to help school-based SLPs.

Unlimited Students

Speech Cards now supports an unlimited number of students. This will enable you to keep the scores and recordings for all your students in the app, without having to delete. Store reports for your all your past, current and future students.

Search

Save time looking for students with the new Search feature. Simply tap in the search box and start typing the name of a student. Results appear instantly. Tap on a search result to select the student. Less waiting and start sessions sooner with Search.

Speech Cards - Search

Organized Student List

Find the student you are looking for with the help of the organized Student List. The names of students are organized into alphabetical sections. Last Names are displayed in bold font to help you visually process the list.

Use the new alphabetical index to quickly navigate from one section to another. For example, if you are currently looking at the students in section “A”, tap on the “Y” index to quickly jump down to section “Y”.

Group Sessions

Speech Cards has had support for group sessions since the first version. We’ve made group sessions better by removing the limits on how many students can be added to a group session. Speech Cards now supports any size of group you may have.
