Autism Acceptance Month 2014

Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. Autism Acceptance Month is about sharing positive, respectful, and accurate information about autism and autistic people.

RWH Technology develops apps to help people with special needs, including autism, improve their speech and language skills.

We enjoy supporting the autism community. In March we participated in the San Diego Race For Autism, which raised funds for local families and groups. For Autism Acceptance Month, RWH Technology is a proud sponsor of the iPad Mini Giveaway, hosted by The Appy Ladies, Special Apps, Special Kids and Small But Kinda Mighty. Click here for more information about the giveaway. Good luck everyone!

San Diego Race For Autism – Team RWH Thanks You

Tiffany, Tigger, Inna, Robert

Tiffany, Tigger, Inna, Robert

On March 22, 2014, Team RWH ran in the annual San Diego Race for Autism. It was a great race and we had a lot of fun. Funds raised help families, teacher grants and organizations in the San Diego area. We wish to thank the National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR) for hosting the event. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their support. We greatly appreciate it!

Team RWH consisted of myself, my wife Tiffany and my mother Inna. My mother travelled all the way from Nova Scotia, Canada to participate!

The race course was a 5km loop through Balboa Park. There were nearly 7000 participants of all ages. Even dogs were welcome! The event had a super hero theme, so many of the participants were dressed in costume. We all finished with good times. Congratulations to Inna who finished 3rd in her age group! All participants who crossed the finish line won a medal.

It was a really great experience to participate in the San Diego Race For Autism. NFAR is a great organization and it was good to support the local autism community. NFAR is accepting donations for the event until April 5, so it’s not too late to donate. Again, thank you very much for your support.

Below are some photos from the event.

SpeakColors Review by iAutism

iAutism

iAutism posted a great review (in Spanish) of SpeakColors in December, 2013. An English version of the review is now available. The review covers both SpeakColorsHD and SpeakColors Español. Thank you iAutism for taking the time to review both apps!

“SpeakColors is much more than an app to learn colors, and provides exercises to learn diverse vocabulary, to work receptive and expressive language, and to practice various basic structures of sentences.”

Below are links to the full review in English and Spanish:

Speech Cards 1.3.0 – New Options for Group Sessions

Speech Cards is great for group speech therapy sessions. Speech Cards supports groups of all sizes and keeps scores for each student. Changing from one student to another is quick and easy. On the iPad version, only two taps are required to change students. However, sometimes you forget to change students and accidentally score the wrong student. We have two exciting new features in Speech Cards version 1.3.0 to help you in your group sessions:

  1. Option to automatically advance to the next student in the list. When swiping or changing to a new card, the app will select the next student. This option is disabled by default.
  2. Option to announce the name of the next student. This option serves as an auditory cue for when it is another student’s turn. To hear the name of the student, you will need to use the microphone on the screen for editing the name of the student. This option is enabled by default.

Both of these new options are accesible from the Options screen.

Summary of What’s New in Version 1.3.0

  • Option to automatically advance to the next student.
  • Record the name of the student.
  • Option to announce the next student.
  • Fixed issue with voice recording on iPad with AirPlay Mirroring.
  • Removed “(null)” from the PDF of a Detailed Session Report with no notes.
  • Fixed import issue.

Speech Cards version 1.3.0 is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch on the App Store:

Conclusion

We think the new options will greatly improve the flow of your group sessions and reduce scoring mistakes. The new options for group sessions were designed with this rule in mind: a new card equals somebody else’s turn. Not everyone uses the same rules. The options can be disabled if they do not suit your needs. Thank you Special Apps, Special Kids for suggesting the option to automatically advance to the next student! We appreciate suggestions from our users. We would love to hear your feedback on this update, particularly on how you use Speech Cards with groups. Reviews on the App Store are greatly appreciated. Please leave a comment or contact us if you have any questions.
