Speech Cards Updated for 64-bit and iOS 10

It’s been a while since we last updated Speech Cards. Recently you may have received this warning message when starting the app:

iOS Compatibility Alert

The above warning message appears for 32-bit apps. Apple introduced the warning message with iOS 10.1 to push developers to update theirs apps for 64-bit. All of Apple’s iOS devices now use 64-bit chips.

Today, I am happy to announce the release of Speech Cards Version 1.4.0. This important release updates the app for 64-bit architecture and is optimized for iOS 10. You will no longer receive the warning message above.

What’s next for Speech Cards?

Speech Cards was created in 2012 and was one of my first apps. It is programmed in Objective-C, uses a SQLite database, and the user interface is all done 100% programmatically (including auto layout). The iOS world has changed a lot since then and I’ve learned a lot too!

Work has begun to re-write Speech Cards with the goal of making it easier and faster to add new features. The app will be re-written in Swift, a modern programming language, which is a joy to use. Storyboard, the technology to visually implement user interfaces in iOS, has significantly matured and really helps reduce development time. The user interface will be re-implemented in Storyboard. With an easier and faster update process, I hope to implement more of the great ideas sent to us by our users.

Speech Cards 1.3.0 – New Options for Group Sessions

Speech Cards is great for group speech therapy sessions. Speech Cards supports groups of all sizes and keeps scores for each student. Changing from one student to another is quick and easy. On the iPad version, only two taps are required to change students. However, sometimes you forget to change students and accidentally score the wrong student. We have two exciting new features in Speech Cards version 1.3.0 to help you in your group sessions:

  1. Option to automatically advance to the next student in the list. When swiping or changing to a new card, the app will select the next student. This option is disabled by default.
  2. Option to announce the name of the next student. This option serves as an auditory cue for when it is another student’s turn. To hear the name of the student, you will need to use the microphone on the screen for editing the name of the student. This option is enabled by default.

Both of these new options are accesible from the Options screen.

  • Fixed issue with voice recording on iPad with AirPlay Mirroring.
  • Removed “(null)” from the PDF of a Detailed Session Report with no notes.

Conclusion

We think the new options will greatly improve the flow of your group sessions and reduce scoring mistakes. The new options for group sessions were designed with this rule in mind: a new card equals somebody else’s turn. Not everyone uses the same rules. The options can be disabled if they do not suit your needs. Thank you Special Apps, Special Kids for suggesting the option to automatically advance to the next student! We appreciate suggestions from our users. We would love to hear your feedback on this update, particularly on how you use Speech Cards with groups. Reviews on the App Store are greatly appreciated. Please leave a comment or contact us if you have any questions.

2. Green stop button during audio playback

Speech Cards features the ability to record and playback your voice. While recording, a red button appears for stopping the recording. However, during audio playback, the stop button is also red. This may cause confusion as to whether you are recording or playing the audio.

One of our users suggested a green stop button for audio playback. Speech Cards now has a green stop button during audio playback. Now you know if you are in record-mode or play-mode by the color of the stop button.

3. Small “x” to erase the contents of a card’s text field

Speech Cards is designed to be easy to customize so you can create your own cards to suit the needs of your students. We have added a small “x” to erase the contents of a card’s text field. This speeds up the process of adding new cards. Thank you Special Apps, Special Kids for suggesting this feature.

How to enable the microphone on iOS 7

iOS7-logo

iOS 7 has new Privacy Settings, including restrictions on the microphone. When you use the microphone in an app for the first time, the app will ask you for permission to access the microphone. For example you may get a prompt such as:

“SpeakColors Español Pro” Would Like to Access the Microphone.

You are given two choices:
1. Don’t Allow
2. OK

If you selected Don’t Allow, the microphone won’t work and you will need to change the settings.

Please follow these steps to enable the microphone:
1. Press Settings
2. Press Privacy
3. Press Microphone
4. Enable microphone access for for the app:
Microphone Privacy Setting

This issue affects all iPad and iPhone apps that use a microphone, including our apps, SpeakColors and Speech Cards. If you have any questions, please contact us. Thank you.

Speech Cards for School-Based SLPs

School may be out for the summer, but we have been working on some exciting new features to help school-based Speech-Language Pathologists. A survey by ASHA found that the median caseload of a school-based SLP (in the USA) was 47 students. Without adequate support, managing such a large number of students in an app can be difficult. Speech Cards is a very versatile iOS app as it can be customized to suit the goals of a wide range of students. We are very excited to share with you, the new features of Speech Cards version 1.1.2, designed to help school-based SLPs.

Unlimited Students

Speech Cards now supports an unlimited number of students. This will enable you to keep the scores and recordings for all your students in the app, without having to delete. Store reports for your all your past, current and future students.

Search

Save time looking for students with the new Search feature. Simply tap in the search box and start typing the name of a student. Results appear instantly. Tap on a search result to select the student. Less waiting and start sessions sooner with Search.

Organized Student List

Find the student you are looking for with the help of the organized Student List. The names of students are organized into alphabetical sections. Last Names are displayed in bold font to help you visually process the list.

Use the new alphabetical index to quickly navigate from one section to another. For example, if you are currently looking at the students in section “A”, tap on the “Y” index to quickly jump down to section “Y”.

Group Sessions

Speech Cards has had support for group sessions since the first version. We’ve made group sessions better by removing the limits on how many students can be added to a group session. Speech Cards now supports any size of group you may have.
